Territorial Acknowledgement

We recognize and honour the First Nations on whose traditional unceded lands we gather and worship: The Sinixt, the Ktanaxa, Schewepemc, and the Syilx who were here before us. May justice and reconciliation come to all peoples in the love of the Creator.

Revelstoke and the United Church sits on the traditional unceded territory (that is, where there was no formal treaty; nearly all of British Columbia is unceded territory) of four separate groups of First Nations people: The Schwepemc (the Shuswap peoples), the Ktanaxa (the Kootenai peoples), the Syilx (the Okanagan peoples), and the Sinixt (The Arrow Lakes band, whom we acknowledge though the Canadian Government does not recognize their continued presence in Canada). At the beginning of each worship and prayer service, we acknowledge with the words above that this area has been used for thousands of years before the first European settles as the traditional territory of these peoples and honour the fact that the church is built on Native soil.
